Since 1992, charter schools have been created to permit educators the autonomy and freedom to operate and innovate independently and creatively. In exchange for such liberties and freedoms, charter schools must be accountable for results, and their long term success is directly tied to positive performance. Therefore, at a successful charter school, all stakeholders – the charter board, the school staff, students and families – are fully invested in and committed to student success.
Charter schools operate under an agreement, or "charter," that defines the nature of the academic program they will provide and the pre-established performance benchmarks against which the school will be judged by its charter authorizer.
Such accountability standards generally include, but are rarely limited to, reference to state standardized test scores. If, at the end of the contract period, the school has not met its performance goals, the agreement may not be renewed by the authorizer and the school could be closed.
Many charter schools opt to partner with an organization that works with the school to provide educational expertise. Such partnerships allow individuals who seek to open a strong charter school to do so, even if they lack educational and operational knowledge. The school’s board can essentially outsource those services by hiring a management partner to do this work for them. EdisonLearning is this partner of choice.
