History

During the 2009-2010 school year, 400,000 children in 25 states, the U.K. and Abu Dhabi are being served through EdisonLearning’s partnerships. We are proud of our history, and we are proud of the more than 1 million students who have succeeded at EdisonLearning partner schools.

1992 EdisonLearning is founded as “The Edison Project.”
1995 The first four EdisonLearning schools open their doors, using a research-based approach to create an innovative school design.
1999 Launch of EdisonLearning Benchmarks in all partnership schools, the pioneering formative assessment system written to state standards.
2000 The first Summer Journey summer school opens, followed in 2001 with the launch of Learning Force standards-based tutoring.
2001 EdisonLearning begins a partnership with the School District of Philadelphia in what has become a prominent model for major urban school reform.
2004 The first full-scale  EdisonLearning Allianceprogram is launched. Alliance boosts learning in low-performing schools through dedicated teams who use an array of proven tools and strategies that optimize the existing school structure.
2008

EdisonLearning acquires pioneering education software company Provost Systems®, based in Santa Clara, California. With the addition of Provost Systems, EdisonLearning combines nearly 20 years of experience and core competencies in teaching and learning with a fully integrated online and web-based technology solution that can dramatically achieve universal student access to a genuine, individualized learning experience.

“EdisonLearning” replaces “Edison Schools” as the company name. This change reflects the company’s transformation into an organization offering school leaders a comprehensive portfolio of educational solutions including School Designs partnerships, Achievement Services that deliver sustainable school improvement, Extended Education programs that complement the school day such as tutoring and summer programs, and comprehensive Online learning capabilities including rigorous online curriculum, innovative learning technologies and full-scale online schools.

2009 EdisonLearning opens its first fully online public charter high school – Provost Academy™ South Carolina  – with an enrollment of 1,500 students.
2010

EdisonLearning opens its second fully online public charter high school – Provost Academy™ Colorado.
